What are some dreams that you're holding onto? It's important to have dreams so that we remain hopeful and inspired.
Lately, I’ve been thinking about my old dreams so I wrote an entire list that I’ve given up on despite thinking they’ll make me happy. Through that reflection exercise, I realized there are some old ones I’d like to revisit and some new ones I’d like to pursue.
Create comics
As a kid, I went through a phase where I drew comics and doodled whenever I was bored or waiting for something. For instance, there were times when I had to wait for my sisters to finish their piano lessons. My mom would give me paper and a pen to draw. I’d create characters like Superdog and Gold Diggin’ Amy and come up with the most ridiculous stories.
Thinking about this, I may just revisit the idea one day.
Host my own Cooking Show
I watched a ton of Food Network whenever I came home from school. That’s how I learned to cook. So whenever I experimented in the kitchen, I would often pretend to be the host of my own cooking show, explaining the details of each step and the significance of each ingredient.
But of course, this was during a time when filming yourself wasn’t the norm. YouTube and social media didn’t exist for me to share my work. Video creators weren’t a dime a dozen. The technology wasn’t accessible or affordable for a high schooler 20 years ago.
I thought I would need to be hired by a TV network and audition to achieve this dream. And going through all that didn’t seem worth it.
Considering how many food pictures I post on Instagram, I might just like to explore later on in life. Maybe I’ll call it Dim Sum on Sleeve or something like that.
Run a marathon
Before kids, running was my way to destress, organize my thoughts and practice mindfulness. The pumping of my lungs and heart in conjunction with the blood flow to my leg muscles helped ground me. I probably ran about 1000 miles after the break-up with my ex-boyfriend.
I’ve completed multiple 10Ks and a half-marathon but never a full one. Since having kids, walks to the park, living room dance parties and yoga when the kids watch TV have replaced all my runs. For me, I don’t like scheduled exercise. I make it a goal to move my body once a day and find ways to achieve it.
But I’m certain when the kids are a bit older, and I have more freedom to leave the house whenever I want, I will eventually run those 42.2 kilometres.
Complete a triathlon
From water to land, the triathlon is like a symbol of human evolution. I love the idea of challenging your body through active transport.
I know the running and swimming parts will be relatively okay for me to train. But the hard part would be the biking. I’ve never been a strong biker and it’s a goal of mine to feel confident enough to bike with my kids around the city. I think having an overarching dream to complete a triathlon sometime in the near future will help put those family bike rides into motion.
Do every single Yoga pose
I practice Yoga around 3–4 times a week. My physical build is not meant for yoga. I’m naturally muscular with shorter limbs, thicker bones and broad shoulders. I have more of a swimmer’s or rower’s body than a wire-like yogi.
But genetics do not deter me from this dream. I think with patience and more practice, I will eventually get to a point where I can do every single Yoga pose on my Pinterest boards. So far, I’ve been able to hold the basic tree pose for several deep breaths without flailing. I think on the right course.
Become a bestselling author
I self-published 3 books last year and none of them were bestsellers. Before hitting publish on those, I never set the expectation to sell a ton of them. It was my way of exploring different methods of making money from my writing.
However, as I’m becoming more serious in my writing endeavour, eventually I’d like to write a book strong enough to sell to the masses. And the book would be something I’ll work super hard on, not just an experiment. I’ll dot my i’s and cross my t’s and promote it properly.
Become a world-famous speaker and presenter
I’ve created over 200 videos of myself on YouTube and over 200 podcast episodes. As an introvert, I don’t like meetings. I don’t like small talk. I don’t like brainstorming sessions. But I get a high when I have to present in front of a group of people about a topic I am passionate about.
Once I have the book, maybe that’s when the speaking opportunities will flood in?
Travel on a private jet
Hey, you never know. That way, this covers all my travel dreams too.
